The sad, sad story of flushless toilets – Japan’s spent fuel pools

The Japanese often refer to their nuclear power plants (NPPs) as apartments without toilets. This is due to the complete lack of planning by the power companies and the government regarding the disposal of spent nuclear fuel. As Japan gears up to restart its NPPs in the near future, the spent fuel pools are beginning to look more and more like flushless toilets...

Shattered Genomes – Absorbed Dose vs. Second Event

WHO, UNSCEAR, IAEA, ICRP, governments and academia protect the nuclear industry by claiming that low-levels of ionizing radiation do not result in large numbers of health effects such as cancers and congenital abnormalities. It appears, however, that the ICRP risk factors underestimate health effects by a factor of 200 to 600. The Second Event Theory is one attempt to develop a mechanism that explains the dangers of low-level radiation. Meanwhile, in Japan recently, Mr. Hobun Ikeya, a veterinary surgeon and president of the Ecosystem Conservation Society-Japan caused an uproar by stating, “People in areas over which the radioactive plumes passed should not marry [...] If they give birth to children after getting married, the incidence of deformities may be very high.” He was referring to approximately 30 million people. He was asked by a number of Fukushima City councilors to retract the statement, but did not.

Japan's Energy "Options"

The Japanese government has recently announced power supply "options," which it says will be used as a basis for a "national debate," the outcome of which will be reflected in the formulation of a new Basic Energy Plan. But what is it about the deceptive methodology of the "options" that always leads to the conclusion that nuclear power is "necessary"...?

Scientific dishonesty and nuclear power - Chris Busby at the Royal Society

Talk by Dr. Chris Busby about scientific dishonesty in nuclear issues at the Royal Society in London last November. How do the government committees work? How are scientific papers selected or deselected for publication in the mainstream journals? How does scientific fraud become established knowledge, thereby sweeping the illness and death of thousands of people under the carpet to protect the use of nuclear materials for military purposes? It's all in here... Powerpoint presentation added on 11 Jan 2012.

The Realization of Human “Happiness”

The current social/political/economic system is based on the notion that greater economic/material well-being will lead us to "happiness." It doesn't seem to be working too well. Here's why. Although a certain degree of material well-being is necessary for a "decent" life, it is not a sufficient condition for "happiness." What's missing is a centuries-long colonization of the mind that has divorced human life from nature. Unless we reconnect, we will never find "happiness."

Parents of 14 Children Initiate Legal Proceedings for Mass Evacuation of Schools in Koriyama City, Fukushima Pref.

The nuclear disaster at Fukushima No.1 Power Station has contaminated a large area of Fukushima Prefecture, especially to the west and northwest of the disaster site. Some areas have been evacuated, but Japan's Ministry of Education has set schoolchild radiation standards at an abnormally high level in order to try to keep the population in place. Parents, however, have reacted explosively to the ministry's directives and a court case is about to begin...Updated - Chris Busby to visit Japan July 17-21 - Schedule here

ROLLING UPDATE No.2 on Japan Earthquake, Tsunami and Nuclear Disaster by Japan resident

[Ed. 6 April - Must read update - off-scale radioactive measurements found. Site workers doomed.] The nuclear disaster continues in Japan. It is unclear if there has been a full meltdown in any of the reactors, but the government and related ministries and commissions are saying that there has not been and that the situation is slowly coming under control. There is a definite move afoot to downplay what has happened at Fukushima No.1 Power Station in an attempt to ensure that the Japanese population do not do anything like demand the end of nuclear power in Japan. However, if you look at the update for April 6, you will see that the situation is still extremely serious/dangerous. Please look in again from time to time as I am updating this several times a day.

ROLLING UPDATE on Japan Earthquake, Tsunami and Nuclear Disaster by Japan resident

I want to say 'THANK YOU' to everyone who has read the article, "Japan Earthquake, Tsunami and Nuclear Disaster - A personal story about the next 100 years of human history," commented and given their support to the idea of a nuclear-free world. Here I want to reiterate the 'campaign' aim, introduce the campaign slogan - Say 'No to Nukes!' and then list all relevant links that so many people have sent in to me regarding this disaster and the problems of nuclear power in general. This entry will 'grow' as links and discussion are added (at the moment every 10 minutes). Please 'stay tuned' to the ongoing discussion here and please add links and any other information you feel is relevant to the comments section. If your link/info is important I will it edit into the main 'article'. Thank you and tell everyone to say 'No to nukes!'

Japan Earthquake, Tsunami and Nuclear Disaster - A personal story about the next 100 years of human history

"All the reactors are screwed and we are looking at the very worst situation right now. Even on the BBC those mysterious water puddles the TEPCO guys paddled in have 10,000 times the radiation levels. 10,000. That means the core reactor is leaking. The zirconium cladding tubes of the spent fuel rods are also cracked like broken egg shells. Reactor 3 with the MOX uranium and plutonium is responsible for the now much higher radiation levels (8 times last week - which was bad enough in itself). Vast tracts of northern Japan, including Tokyo and as far south as Osaka are going to be uninhabitable. Hokkaido may be ok, but too cold to support life without adequate cheap fuel."
