Carers Alliance Lead Senate Candidate for Queensland, Felicity Maddison has drafted a memorandum of understanding for Queensland’s carers and is calling on the new Federal Government to immediately implement it.
The memorandum of understanding includes the right of a primary carer to seek external employment to the family home, and if unable to do so then the in-home support work will be to a maximum of 40 hours a week, as is the standard Australian working conditions, and will include 12.5% superannuation.
They are also calling for four weeks annual leave while carers should earn a minimum of $450.00 per week tax-free.
“This will make it fair for Queensland’s carers who are struggling with the current arrangements,” Ms Maddison said.
“Currently most primary carers are unpaid, and only receive sick leave if they have a life threatening illness. This is simply unacceptable.”
“Family carers are presently paid between 27 cents to $1.61 per hour and work 168 hours per week for 365 days of the year.”
“It is an appalling situation to place carers in - a situation where many simply can’t afford basic living costs and don’t have any time free for external activities and employment.”
“I will personally be pursuing this if the Carers Alliance is elected into the Senate next week.”
