China, Yulin : Campaign against criminal institutionalised cruelty to dogs who are often stolen pets

Most of these animals are stolen pets. All Chinese are not cruel, but this festival provides an economic excuse for the cruelest of thefts and practices, which many Chinese want ended: Open letter from Animal activist, Chantal Buslot: An animal rights lawyer in Beijing said that official claims that all dogs slaughtered for the Chinese Dog Meat Festival are bred by local dog farmers is false. Xiang said according to research there are no such farms and that all dogs are abducted from the streets. (http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/china-dog-meat-festival-2014-10000-dogs-be-slaughtered-yulin-summer-solstice-celebration-1451869) It is thought most dogs are pets or strays abducted from streets. Vendors then buy them for nine yuan (85p) and sell them for 25 yuan. People who steal the dogs make the biggest profits of all, the news agency said.

Criminal laws are broken

"Some of the animal thieves broke Criminal Law using weapons to threaten residents to hand over their dogs,"Li said.
(http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/china-dog-meat-festival-2014-dogs-sold-85p-cooking-solistice-hotpot-1452814) According to the 'Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China, Part I-General Provisions, Article 2 states The tasks of the PRC Criminal Law are to use punishment struggle against all criminal acts to defend national security, the political power of the people's democratic dictatorship, and the socialist system; to protect state-owned property and property collectively owned by the laboring masses; to protect citizens' privately owned property; to protect citizens' right of the person, democratic rights, and other rights; to maintain social and economic order; and to safeguard the smooth progress of the cause of socialist construction.

As a concerned global citizen, I am worried about the beloved pets of families being stolen and sold for the YuLin Dog Meat Festival.

According to Chapter Three, Section V, Article 99 of the Chinese Constitution states the following Local people's congresses at various levels ensure the observance and implementation of the Constitution and other laws and the administrative regulations in their respective administrative areas.

Within the limits of their authority as prescribed by law, they adopt and issue resolutions and examine and decide on plans for local economic and cultural development and for the development of public services.

Is it not the duty of the Yulin government, and the Agriculture Ministry, to ensure Criminal laws are not broken and the Chinese Constitution is upheld? If this were implemented in the next couple weeks, then this YuLin festival would assuredly be closed down as a public health risk and because of the brutal killings of the cats and dogs of greater YuLin.

Please, President Xi, this is not about animal rights but about upholding Chinese laws that are there to protect all citizens. We urge you to please get involved and ask the appropriate committees to prevent future laws from being broken by canceling the festival.

The world is watching Yulin as this festival gets closer and it's terrified by what it sees.

Sincerely, Chantal Buslot Belgium [Animal Activist]

There are those who deny the concept of human "evil" and dismiss it as superstition, or some cultist thinking! One only has to see these horrendous and hideous images to realize that we are looking at evil! This is not about food, or about texture, or gastronomic delight -but about sadism and clammering to be the highest in the "jungle" to be the top predator of species. Some pathetic people need to feel power over others, and it's evidence of some inherent personal inadequacy or weakness. The need to inflict pain and suffering on "lower" beings, without defence!

On the contrary, caring for animals and the animal rights movement tends to bring out the best qualities in people, and a closed link with Nature.

Proverbs 12:10 "a righteous man (person) has regard for the life of his animal, But even the compassion of the wicked is cruel.."

“I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men.” Leonardo da Vinci

“Man is the cruelest animal.” Friedrich Nietzsche

Why so much suffering in China? Probably living in draconian society with little compassion for human rights has hardened their hearts.

All too often, the argument that living things must devour to live, that other animals hunt kill and eat, and therefore so must we, gets trotted out.

What makes us human, is our ability to reflect on our actions, to be cognisant and realise the implications of what we are doing. Animals don't have this ability (at least it doesn't appear to be so), so they do hunt, kill and eat, often without regard for the preys suffering. The hyena's don't have the faculties to realise, and empathise with their prey they are eating alive for half an hour. They are not choosing to forgo the use of these mental faculties. It just isn't there.

We however do. Which is what makes a human being treating animals this way so much worse. We can know, have the ability to know and understand, but we choose to pretend to be at a lower animal level, that we have to do what it takes to survive. In doing this, we shuffle off part of our humanity.

So much misery and suffering is caused by people justifying acting on automatic impulses and desires, rather than mastering them.

This is why time and time again, whether in the Bible, in moral teachers and philosophers, that the idea of self restraint and self discipline comes in, and why what is considered sin, is often acting in impulses. Greed, lust, gluttony, anger and envy are the result of us being driven, and controlled by automatic urges, than being in control of them.

Unfortunately, I don't think it is simply the draconian society that does this. Cruelty exists in free countries. It could be the deculturalisation of China, but one has to wonder why Communism didn't have the same effect in Eastern Europe.

I can't bear to look at the video. The photographs are bad enough. The documented cruelty happening in the world, news of which reaches me daily via my computer is becoming overwhelming. I am bombarded with it and this would be bearable if it were fiction, but it is not. It is true!

It is no longer possible to be happy in this world; knowing of this undeniable suffering and wanton cruelty, perpetrated by humans such as that illustrated in the above article. If it happened once, maybe it could eventually be forgotten but it never ends. It's getting to the stage now where, if I see a photo of a dead animal that shouldn't have died but may not have suffered too much, I'm almost reassured.

One cannot ever un-know about the cruelty one sees on the Internet so the best that I can now manage is temporary escape through entertainment or the occasional momentarily distracting conversation on an unrelated subject. I feel assaulted, hurt, damaged by these photos and all the other terrible ones that have entered my life via the computer screen. I'm sure I am not alone in this. The sooner humans disappear from the face of the earth, the better.

We have received an email advocating death, by the same method, for people who skin dogs and cats alive in China. We cannot publish the email because it could be construed as advocating violence and it gets very angry. We try to avoid censorship except where comments break the law (advocating violence or singling out particular races). However we are sure that a lot of people do feel just as angry about this kind of torture and believe it to be unnecessary and a sign of severe dysfunction in a society. So I hope that the writer (Andrea) will accept this compromise.
