Sustainable population business breakfast: When is enough, enough?

“There is only one problem. There are too many of us,” says former Environment Minister, Andrew McNamara. “Every day, the front pages of our papers are covered in variations on the same problem. Whether the issue is traffic congestion, overcrowding on trains, waiting lists for hospitals, skills shortages, social alienation in urban sprawl, food security, water security or global warming." And, despite all this 'robust growth' in Queensland - and the rest of the Australia and the third world - business isn't doing very well.

Report on the Victorian Transport Infrastructure Conference

Full steam ahead. Vast increase in population and infrastructure. Vast decrease in democracy. There is no plan B. Minister Pallas assured the audience they would secure the necessary environmental approvals/considerations. The EES is not a yes or no process. International migration levels never seen before...address future labour force. Long term drivers - migration. Health infrastructure needed - maternity wards. Taxpayers to bail-out developers to continue even more malignant growth. Hastings doomed according to plan.

Westernport & Peninsula threatened by most massive industrial development ever in Australia

Social and environmental damage of unprecedented proportions looms over Westernport and will spearhead the suffocation of natural environment and democratic community on the Mornington Peninsula if projects on the drawing board continue to exert a heavy influence on local and state government and actually find funding. Report from Southern Victoria Community Action Group (SVCAG). SVCAG is an independent expert in its own right on these developments and should represent the regions' citizens, vote on reference groups and give advice. It has, however, been kept off the Port of Hastings Corp Community Reference Group. It is unacceptable to shut out citizens' groups from significant developments.

An important message for Parks Victoria

What kind of incompetent government cannot even keep small creatures like bandicoots from extinction? Wildlife ecologist and forensic animal hair identification expert, Hans Brunner, says politicians and greedy planners have seriously watered down and misinterpreted the meaning of the word 'reserve'. Parks Victoria complain about the lack of money, but spend money on infrastructure for people leaving no money for the protection of plants and animals, or for weeding, predator control and fencing, which should be their first and only priority.

Australians have until 15 June 2009 to complain about their declining human rights

Did you know that Australians have until 15 June 2009 to complain about their declining human rights?
There are avenues for people concerned about the government's big population policy and its effect on human rights to safe clean water, a healthy wild biodiverse envelope, kind treatment of farm animals, functioning democracy not overwhelmed by commercial interests, the right to local self-government, to affordable housing etc to get demands on public record via the National Human Rights consultation.
It could be our last chance. UPDATE 7 Sep 2009: Note that a submission based on this article has been published as Submission # AGWW-7SM63S on the National Human Rights Consultation pages. Please support its content if you agree with it.

Vic Planning Legislative Bill enslaves Victorians to Growth Lobby

"[T]his bill will enable the government, without any further recourse to the Parliament, to declare an area to be a growth area. Following on from that will be the liability of citizens to pay this increased levy" [$95,000 per hectare on land zoned from rural]. Mr Clark MP spoke of the "extraordinary price" of Victorian Labor's Planning Legislative Amendment Bill "in terms of intrusion on local communities, the diminution of the capacity of local communities to have a say in their own destiny, and the undermining of the role of local government councillors." "The bill, whichever way you look at it, is badly flawed. It attacks principles of democracy, of devolution and decentralisation. It attacks principles of accountability to Parliament by government for revenue raising. It is bad in all of those respects, and it is opposed by the coalition."

ACT Roo killings: Who profits? Behind the Earless Dragon mask

Human Population growth impacts on wildlife: The endangered Earless Dragon is being used to justify killing thousands of Eastern Gray kangaroos in Belconnen and Majura, but the motive is really developers' profit. As grasslands are turned into building sites, as human population growth is encouraged.. Kangaroos are in the way, as is democracy, so both are being buried. See also:Kangaroo articles

Oz-Budget Monster 2009: official Public Partnership with Growth Lobby

To achieve this bootstrap economy, this Australian sideshow of perpetual motion, or the revival of dead spirits, the PM has invented something called the Australian Business Investment Partnership (ABIP). It's a public-private partnership between the Federal government and the commercial property sector. The Developers and the big four banks think it's just great - so that's okay ... isn't it?

Marina projects in trouble all round Australia

Communities in many different parts of Australia have been fighting marinas on ecological, social and economic grounds, predicting they had no financial future. Lisa Allen's article, in "Developers come clean as tide goes out at marinas" (Fin Review) bears out this financial forecast. Marinas are on the nose, like the proverbial dead fish."

Meeting about Melbourne's water and population growth - June 16th

Earnest Healy, Senior research fellow in the Centre for Population and Urban Research at Monash University, presents new research into fundamental considerations and constraints in the fast growing city of Melbourne including the potential capacity and limits of our rail network and of our most basic necessity- water. Public Meeting May 16th 2009

Frankston citizens fight massive marina push by Madden

"Frankston Beach Association [has] grave concerns as to the financial, environmental and social probity of this proposed [marina]. This proposed development is flawed, and if it fails, the Frankston community will pay the price. We are currently witnessing the financial failure of 'iconic' developments world wide. The community of Frankston can ill afford a financial, environmental and social disaster on their doorstep at this time. We respectfully request that our concerns carefully detailed in our 'Comments and Review of the proposed Frankston C50 Planning Scheme Amendment' dated 17 December 2008, be individually and properly considered and be factually responded to."

Melbourne residents held to ransom on water

Do Melbourne residents have the option of refusing to pay higher water charges? - No.
Did Melbourne residents have the right to refuse population growth in their area? - No.
The State has purposefully engineered a situation where organisations beyond electoral control have gained control over water delivery and the state has purposefully increased demand for water by forcibly increasing population. This is the essence of corporate government. Out of reach of democracy.

Review by sociologist, Katharine Betts of Overloading Australia

For those with their eyes open population growth and the immigration that fuels it are never out of the news. ... unaffordable housing drives young families into debt slavery (even pushing some to the less-expensive urban fringe where a number died in Melbourne’s recent fires)... strained infrastructure leading to blackouts, cancelled train services... traffic congestion, draining energy from the economy and from human lives...hospitals that can no longer care for the people they serve... water supplies that dwindle as drought and growth desiccate cities and stretch the capacity of farms... pleasant suburbs degraded by intensive redevelopment; greenhouse gases ...and a natural environment wilting under the burden of numbers.

Property Council conference placarded by Peak Oil and Sustainable Population advocates in South Australia

Public Alert - ADI Site - Council to approve 3420 houses Monday night

Urgent: Penrith Council set to vote tomorrow night to approve 2 new Delfin-lend-lease suburbs totalling 3420 dwellings at the former ADI Site, last big stand of Cumberland grasslands. Residents say public has no idea of what is in process and call on councillors to defer approval pending series of public meetings. Council planners urge councillors to approve plans despite residents' 16 year campaign to save this environmentally crucial sanctuary for wildlife and natural ammenity, not to mention safe CO2 store.

NSW Planning Minister brings tragic, stupid end to last grasslands

Kristina Keneally, NSW Planning Minister, sells out public land and the environment to Delfin Lend Lease. Now many gentle wild creatures will die the most abject deaths and 1000s of trees will give up their carbon to the atmosphere. How much more nature to be destroyed for narrow corporate interests in a dead-in-the-water economy for the grasping few? See also "Council bastardry..."

Heatwave-hundreds dead - Government population policy made water & power shortages worse

The ministers, planners and economists involved in overshooting our power and water supply should be suspended from employment and publicly placed on trial for gross negligence towards Victorians' welfare, contributing to death and suffering.

Fire bunkers could have helped in the Victorian fires

A 'fire-bunker' is similar to those made to shelter from fire in war. It works in bush-fires too. If they had been used as extensively as they once were, hundreds of lives could have been saved. However, if the bunker is not built properly and not built below ground level, it could be a death trap.

Important: See, also, article "How misconceptions about bushfire bunkers may cost lives", which disputes some of the content of this article and comments.

Help Stop the Commercialisation of National Parks

NSW Government trying to bring weaker national park protection laws to permit development of damaging private accommodation, such as cabins, lodges and ‘eco-resorts’ in our national parks. And we need to stop these laws. The NSW Government has not even asked the community if they want national parks developed! Public Meeting on 26th Feb.

Why wildlife and Devilbend Reserve need more protection (Mornington Peninsula, Oz)

A Re-Classification of Devilbend is critical to preventing the total demise of wildlife on the Mornington Peninsula: designation change from a ‘Natural Features Reserve’, to a ‘Nature Conservation Reserve’. Interconnecting wildlife corridors, through private land, minimum 200 metres in width and the rigorous preservation and restoration of Devilbend as a central core Reserve are essential.

Re-Classification of Devilbend is critical

Tour Downunder leaves local wildlife devastated

"The ‘tour down under’ bike race was hell. The helicopters hovered above my house on and off for 3 hours. The noise terrified the animals I was caring for and obviously disturbed wildlife for tens of kilometers around." (Wildlife carer)

Growth Areas Authorities - Malignant Growth addiction in Victoria

A new and malignant force has been given authority in Victoria by a government which knows no democratic limits and has no moral authority. It is known as the "Growth Areas Authority". It's loyalty is only to 'stakeholders' and it is there to "* Ensure that development occurs in a coordinated and timely manner." It seems to be without loyalty or obedience to citizens, yet it is paid by the Victorian government with taxes.

Property Council population-growth propaganda now a regular feature in Canberra Times

Shouldn't the Canberra Times label as advertising the regular piece by the Property Council of Australia's executive director, Catherine Carter? Isn't there some legal requirement to do so? (Article by Mark O'Connor)

More on the Melbourne protest against Bill to Gag local councilors - video

(Photo of Mary Drost)
The Brumby Government tried to undermine this crucial Melbourne Rally and to avoid criticism by announcing they were modifying their offensive Bill, so the mainstream journalists stayed away. But the alternative press is growing and we will not fall for such simple ploys.
