The Howard Government passed legislation that will close the rolls for new voters at 8.00pm on the night the Federal election is called.
Previously, voters had a week to register to vote.
Last election, the Electoral Commission received a total of 423,975 enrolment cards in that week; 78,816 of those were new enrolments.
Many 18-year-olds will miss out on the chance to register under this new legislation.
