President H. Susilio Bambang Yudhoyono,
c/o Mr Emil Salim, Special Presidential Environmental Adviser
Gedung Bina Graha Lt. 2
Jl. Veteran No, 16 Jakarta, Indonesia
Dear Mr. President,
I am writing care of Mr. Emil Salim, to appeal to you to immediately STOP the torture and genocide of orangutans in your country.
At the very least, 10,000 orangutans have been killed since you became President. Does this not make you feel sad?
More than 55,000 orangutans have been slaughtered in the last 40 years. Despite orangutans being legally protected, not a single person has ever been prosecuted.
In August this year Mr Ir. Darori, Director General, Directorate General Forest Protection & Nature Conservation told
his Thai counterparts he did not want 12 orangutans stolen from Indonesia some two years previously, repatriated to Indonesia.
Do you find such irresponsible behaviour as shocking as I do Mr President? Indonesia’s most iconic animal, some would say a National Treasure, just given away to a country where they will be very cruelly treated.
Along with millions of others, once again I appeal to you to stop this genocide and order Mr Darori to repatriate the 12 orangutans.
For too long the Ministry of Forestry has been permitting this genocide and torture behind your back, and in so doing bringing great shame on Indonesia. I certainly do not want my taxes going to Indonesia in the form of ‘Aid’ when this is how orangutans are treated.
I look forward to hearing from you.
A very concerned Friend of the Orangutans.
