Mary McAleese on fighting the power in the Catholic Church

Ms McAlesse, former President of Ireland, speaks of the "silence" in the Catholic Church. Of Bishops focussed on pleasing the Pope, but not under any pressure to please anybody else like the laity (the people of God). Hence they have not sought to encourage freedom of speech within their congregations. She said "If we have something important to say and cannot say it we become frustrated. Frustration leads to anger. Anger leads to conflict and can lead to violence. That's not why God gave us voices." At this point the crowded Sydney Town Hall burst into applause. Andrew West then spoke of the culture of silence. How did this contribute to the clergy sex abuse crisis, which McAlesse referred to as a "herd of elephants" in the room? The palpable irony of this analogy with the silence on the population growth "elephant in the room" cannot be avoided. The Pope was described as the citadel. Requests to speak by the laity were regarded as an unauthorised assault on that citadel. The ABC is another such citadel, and eventually exclusion of the population growth management issue from public policy debate will be exposed for the scandal that it is...............
