Worried about the plight of your local kangaroos? Kangaroos Alive is promoting this great way to help them, in a video featuring Mornington Peninsula ecologist Craig Thompson of Wildlife Ecosystems Retention and Restoration. Craig has both an awesome knowledge of kangaroos and an awesome love for them. It is a delight to go watch kangaroos with Craig as a guide, anywhere, anytime, but evenings at their Arthur's Seat gardens setting, overlooking Port Phillip Bay, are magical. And there are plenty of places to have coffee or eat along the coast below. Craig is tirelessly positive about the future of kangaroos and he has been defending them and their habitat for decades now, as I can attest because I've often filmed him on the subject. He can also tell you all kinds of amazing stories about the local plants and their history and ecology.
It's only 3 months until World Kangaroo Day (WKD)
We have some ideas on what you can do.
One way to bring your community together to learn about kangaroos is by running a Kangaroo Walk and Talk event.
We have created a kit to help you run a Kangaroo Walk and Talk in your area.
Kangaroos Alive has partnered with Back to Country and Save Kangaroos on the Mornington Peninsula (SKOMP) to develop this practical and helpful kit, that includes Public Liability insurance.
Adapt the kit as you wish to suit your local kangas and community.
START PLANNING NOW SO YOU ARE READY FOR WKD ON OCT 24.
Top 3 tips:
1. Find a local area where kangaroos frequent and get to know the mob.
2. Check with local authorities that you can Host a Walk in that area.
3. Download the Walks and Talks Kit so you are prepared.
Getting to know your local kangaroos is such a fascinating and enriching pastime and will bring many smiles and possibly a few tears.
This is a great way to help your community love, respect and protect the kangaroos.
