How to nominate: State elections
The upcoming State election will be held on Saturday, 27 November 2010.
Thinking about nominating as a candidate for the State election this year? You can stand as a candidate for
either a Lower House District or Upper House Region.
If you’re a member of a political party, the party will manage your nomination directly with the VEC. If you are
thinking of standing as an independent candidate, you will need to organise your own nomination. Nominations open
on Wednesday, 3 November and close for political parties at noon on Thursday, 11 November and at noon on Friday,
12 November for independent candidates.
To nominate for your Lower House District, you will need to have six electors entitled to vote at the election
nominate you (that is, electors within the specific District). You will need to lodge your nomination form with
the Election Manager for that particular district.
To nominate for your Upper House Region, you will need to have 50 electors entitled to vote at the election
nominate you (that is, electors within the specific Region). You will need to lodge you nomination form with any
District Election Manager within that particular Region.
To find the location of your nearest election office, use our Voting Centre Locator -
change the search button to 'Election offices' and insert your address in the search bar. Your nearest election office will
then be returned. If you need to call the office regarding your nomination, please call us on 131 832 for the number.
Candidates should read the relevant Candidate Handbook -

Region (PDF 3.7MB, DOC 6.1MB), to familiarise themselves with the key
requirements and responsibilities of nominating for State elections.
An information session for independent candidates will be held at 2.00pm on Sunday 7 November at 505 Little
Collins St, Melbourne.

printing it out and taking it to the election manager in the electorate for which you wish to stand.

The VEC will also be conducting an information session about the election process for independent candidates at 2.00pm on
Sunday, 7 November 2010 at 505 Little Collins Street, Melbourne.
The VEC strongly recommends that candidates attend this session.
