The two men accused of torturing, mutilating and killing Peanut, the puppy stolen from Moranbah, should not be able to escape on a defence of "mental illness". Criminals of this level are not humans and should not be entitled to “human rights”. They are sub-humans!
There has been a spate of horrific wildlife attacks too. The RSPCA are called out for thousands of attacks on animals every year. We also have cruel, but quite legal, attacks on animals due to the commercial kangaroo killing industry and the live export trade.
Although most of us would cringe at such a crime, the fact that this gross cruelty exists, and can be inflicted on such an innocent creature, means that we, society as a whole, are sliding down a vortex of evil and permissiveness. This pet was more someone's property!
The nature of this and other crimes is extreme, and the perpetrators are purely evil. They should be locked away from society for much more than the maximum of 3 years.
The case against the torturers and killers of Peanut needs to become a precedent for much tougher sentences for animal abuse. While attention goes to human rights, animal rights are being left behind.
There needs to be more laws to protect the vulnerable in our society - particularly animals.

What drives anyone to be so horrible to a poor animal?
