President Maryland Wilson, of the Australian Wildlife Protection Council has today asked the Opposition Victorian Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt, to place pressure on Federal Environment Minister, Peter Garratt, to act immediately to rescue two Australian dingoes stranded in a defunct Romanian zoo. She asks that they be brought back to Australia to the care of the Dingo Sanctuary in Castlemaine, Victoria.
President Wilson says that this is a clear animal welfare case.
"No one will take them or create proper conditions for them, there are very few zoos with very little money in Romania and few animal sanctuaries. "They have never had any dirt beneath their paws... separated in two other cages are two females [dingoes] who became quite aggressive when their families died and because of lack of food, freezing conditions," Laura Simms of the Lions Roar project was reported to have said in September.
The hapless dingoes were a gift from the Australian Commonwealth Government to Romania. The government's responsibility to ensure their care is therefore even more obvious.
The dingos' predicament was probably first reported in September 2008.
Just another example of needless suffering brought to you by homo sapiens. Then again, we also have the gift of mercy - see Will Shakespeare.
The Quality of Mercy
The quality of mercy is not strained.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown.
His scepter shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings.
But mercy is above this sceptered sway;
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings;
It is an attribute of God himself;
And earthly power doth then show like God's
When mercy seasons justice.
