GetUp and organisations like it are an essential component of freedom of speech in Australia.
They often address important issues by bringing them into the public domain when conventional media does not.
The Adani coal export venture on the Barrier Reef is a good example and a recent GetUp headline was "We uncovered a sneaky plot to silence you." This refers to GetUp acting on behalf of its "members". GetUp refers its database of email contacts as members.
But GetUp can use agenda setting bias to mislead, and effectively silence members. GetUp can use propaganda, much as do Government or the mainstream media.
Propaganda is what it used in a recent member survey. Using similar tactics to big business, all the major political parties and all major media including the ABC, GetUp omitted the Population Growth Management issue from the list of issues it provided to its members to vote on.
This quote from GetUp provides an insight into why it did this:
“GetUp sees population stabilisation as being somewhat conflicting with GetUp’s desire to see increased refugee intakes in Australia, and therefore its messaging may become blurred.”
So GetUp is a small group of "agenda setters" seeking to lead its members in the "right" direction. This is the essence of how a dictatorship operates. Make "them" do what YOU want to do; and don't challenge your own tenuous dogma by putting all the real issues on the table. The irony of this almost perfect alignment with the policies of those GetUp depicts as its opponents (ie the Evil Empire comprising big business and "right wing" political dogma) is truly mind-boggling.
GetUp seeks, at its absolute discretion, to conceal the primary cause of emissions growth from its Climate Change Action campaigns. Mass migration of the relatively wealthy into the highest emissions per capita country on earth creates a net increase in global emissions per capita and is inhumane because it targets the fortunate ("skilled" or wealthy) for migration rather than the unfortunate. This acts against both global human rights and the global environment.
Conclusions:
- ABS statistics indicate that Australia’s economy and environment may be deteriorating due to mass migration of relatively wealthy people into what the migration lobby calls "skilled jobs" while unemployment has grown over 50% faster than population growth for the last decade
- The annual Government Budget has grown 6-8% per person while Government debt has escalated and GDP has grown at less than 1% per person for the last decade
- Hence less capacity for increasing foreign aid and refugee intake, and less economic incentive to postpone or prevent environmentally destructive development in regions like the Great Barrier Reef. Wasn't "economic incentive" what the Carbon Tax muddle was supposed to be all about? You use it to make something good happen? Isn't the Environmental Movement using an economic incentive to make everything bad happen with extreme population growth?
- GetUp and its collaborators in the environmental and human rights movements appear to misunderstand the scientific and economic logic underlying the issues they are fighting for
- They appear to be their own worst enemies because they are effectively supporting inhumane and environmentally destructive outcomes
- GetUp and its collaborators need to confront their own dogmatic and unscientific risk management techniques and agenda setting bias to ensure they are driven by rational, feasible strategies for the greater good - rather than by delusionary and dysfunctional ideology
- God save scientific logic as the foundation for humane sustainability, because the Environmental Movement in Australia currently stands in contempt of that logic
