By Geoffrey Taylor with Sheila Newman
Australia's new Foreign Minister, Senator Bob Carr, has wasted little time in rekindling Australia's participation in the Coalition of the Willing, this time against Syria. In 2003 the Coalition illegally invaded Iraq using, as a pretext, the fraudulent claim that Iraq posed a threat to the world with Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs). This followed Australia's participation in the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan, based on an inadequate official investigation of the events of 9/11. As a result of the 2003 invasion of Iraq one million Iraqis may have died according to one study in the British Lancet medical journal. In the ten years prior to that invasion a further one million Iraqis had died from hunger as a result of sanctions imposed upon Iraq by the US, Australia and its allies after the conclusion of the 1991 war against Iraq[1] in which a further 130,000 Iraqis were killed.
Since the Afghan War in 2001, a further 20,000 civilians have died.
Embedded below is a YouTube broadcast of a recent interview with Bob Carr in which he uses inflammatory corporate newsmedia reports about the Syrian conflict to justify the imposition of sanctions on Syria. The journalist in the interview asks Carr if he would consider expelling the Syrian ambassador and Carr does not rule this out.
Carr says nothing of the 2011 invasion of Libya, shamefully supported by Australia's previous foreign minister, Kevin Rudd, nor, of course, anything about Australia's past participation in the wars against Iraq and Afghanistan, mentioned above.
Nor does the interviewer. This is a failure of journalism to situate our current policy and actions in their historic context where our recent actions turned out to be entirely wrongly based. For instance, the fact that many Australians remain unaware that the excuse used by the US to invade Iraq, that it had weapons of mass destruction, was proven to be a CIA fabrication is a complete failure of journalism and national education. This is despite the clear accessibility of the truth in this case. (See Fair Game and the book of the same name.)
These continuing failures of accurate reporting by the Australian mass media - commercial and public - are shunting Australians and the rest of the world blindfolded towards a third world war with the Middle East.
In response to growing competition for ultimately scarce oil resources, world blocs have formed in an effort to get favorable terms for long-term access to Middle Eastern oil. What is going on now represents attempts to isolate Iran by disorganising and possibly invading its neighbours. Iranian oil reserves have been of great interest to the world since the early 20th century, beginning with Anglo-Persian oil. Iran continues to hold a disputed but considerable volume of remaining accessible oil reserves in the world and this is the reason that world attention is currently focused in this area. Iran's position on the Caspian Sea is critical. See "What's in it for Russia? Georgia, Ossetia, & Caspian oil and gas". Multi-national oil companies tend to be aligned with particular national blocs and rely on governments in their negotiations. Access to oil is never left to the international market alone.
Growth economics, combined with population growth in the first world has made us hungry for oil at almost any cost.

Australians seeking a more three dimensional view of these conflicts will find other views on Russia Today's media internet media outlet. The video, "Judging Syria," for instance, talks about how US allies, Saudi Arabia, are engaging in repressive violence that goes almost completely unreported in the media. Other videos ask why the media have lost interest in humanitarian causes in Libya when the country has now dissolved into armed gang warfare. The answer to that question probably resides in the very close cooperation between the Western political blocs and its mass media.

Footnotes
[1] Iraq had been set up by US Ambassador to Kuwait, following Kuwait illegally slant drilling for oil under Iraqi territory. As shown in the transcript of the interview April Glaspie assured Hussein that there would be no adverse consequences from the US were Iraq to invade Kuwait in retaliation for the slant drilling.
As the US was preparing to attack Iraq in reprisal for the invasion, the Public Relations firm Hill and Knowlton manufactured the lie of the "incubator babies" to overcome opposition to the war. See YouTube broadcast, embedded on candobetter in this comment.

Carr's noble bipartisan offering denied by Gillard puppetry
Bob Carr within hours of gracious acceptance of yearned government foreign aristocracy, publicly invited noble bipartisan sharing of ideas and co-operation on foreign policy with the opposition leader Tony Abbott.
4th March 2012:
Carr said he will reach out to the federal opposition to try to engender a more bipartisan approach to Australian foreign policy.
Mr Carr said another of his top priorities in the role would be to reach out to the coalition.
"My door will be open to explore with the opposition further opportunities for the sharing of information and bipartisanship," he told reporters.
"After all this is about Australia, it's about Australia's place in the world.
"We can maximise this area of policy if it is above party political disputation."
14th March 2012:
Immediately after his anointment, Carr was obviously taken aside by the Gillard puppetry and served a 'this is how it is, right!', only to then re-surface publicly with his now infamous acidic branding of Tony Abbott as a "cheapskate hypnotist".
..."He's saying to the electorate, 'Look into my eyes, you are growing weaker - no more boats'," Mr Carr said.
"'Look into my eyes, you are growing weaker in Labor's big bad tax'.
"'Look into my eyes, you are growing weaker - debt and deficit'.
"The endless repetition of these slogans is like an attempt by a trainee hypnotist to work wonders on a cobra in a basket.
"I think the electorate is far too intelligent for this."
The Labor Faceless Party controls the country.

How is Liberal/Labor bipartisan support for war 'noble'?
Whilst John Marlowe sees the bipartisan support by the 'Labor' Government and the Opposition for NATO's war against Libya (and prior to that Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, ...) as 'noble', most informed people would understand that, amongst other things, to be a failure to offer Australians a choice at the ballot box. The most likely reason that Prime Minister Gillard objected to Carr's appeal for bipartisan support is to help maintain the illusion that Australians are given a real choice at Federal elections, when they rarely have since 1983.
As well as supporting the alliance with the US and all the wars that that entails Labor and Liberal also both support 'free market' economic neo-liberalism which obliges Federal, state and local governments to own almost no wealth-creating assets and provide as few services a possible.
I also note that John Marlowe has yet to show why he does not accept the articles listed above as evidence that claims made by Obama, Clinton and Bob Carr against Syria are untrue.

Assad would be out if his rule was as inept as Carr's
This was #comment-32675">posted to sidwalker.info:
If you want to get an idea of how ineptly Bob Carr governed NSW and how unpopular he was, check out Bob Carr's words belied by his record as Premier of NSW of 1 Jan 2009. Much of that article consists of comments posted to the site http://www.abc.net.au/tv/fora/stories/2008/09/18/2362259.htm. Those words from members of the public which tore to shreds Carr's record as Premier have since been removed by 'your' ABC. So what has been put on my web-site remains the only accessible record of that valuable historical material of which I know.
If Bashar al Assad had governed Syria anywhere near as ineptly as Carr ruled NSW in those years he would have been removed from office years ago.

Facts about Syria put to Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr
The following was #comment-8720">posted to the Web Site of Australia's Foreign Minister Bob Carr, #comment-8720">bobcarrblog.wordpress.com, and is awaiting moderation. Update: Comment published! Awaiting response - 2.15PM +1000, 30 August.
The comment below appeared in response to the three part SBS program on “Boat People” broadcast on Sunday, tonight and to be concluded tomorrow night. Whilst Jordan’s treatment of refugees may appear good on the surface, its support for the terrorist war against the Syrian people in alliance with the US, NATO, Israel and the dictatorships of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar cause me to want to scrutinise these claims more closely.
I would be interested to know your response, Bob Carr, to what appears to be an even more exemplary treatment of refugees by Syria, particularly 1,000,000 refugees who fled from Iraq into Syria from the wars of 1991 and 2003 by the “Coalition of the Willing” including Australia?.
COMMENT FROM SBS PROGRAM ON THE BOAT PEOPLE:
http://www.sbs.com.au/goback/yoursay/topic/123/boats-and-the-media
daggett 24 hours ago
So, where has SBS ever acknowledged that the Syrian Government of Bashar al-Assad, which it so likes to demonise, has given refuge to 400,000 Palestinians and 1,000,000 Iraqis including 250,000 Iraqis who fled from the “Coalition of the Willing”, including Australia, in 2003? (See for yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refugees_of_Iraq)
Compared to Australia, which participated in two illegal wars and sanctions against Iraq, which killed 1,000,000 Iraqis (and wars against Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Afghanistan, West Papua, Korea, etc), Syria is a model international citizen.
Who here believes that Australian sanctions against Syria will help refugees in Syria?
If not, then why do we permit the Australian Government to impose sanctions against Syria diplomatically support NATO’s proxy terrorist war against the Syrian people?
(comment from SBS ends.)

Nationalist insurrection in Libya
Libyan nationalist forces regained control of several cities, especially in the sourthern part of the country.
Multiple anti-NATO demonstrations have been reported in the last three days.
The green flag is floating again Ajdabiya, Marsa el-Brega, the port of Ra’s Lanuf, Sabah, Suluq and even Tobruk.
The General National Congress, imposed by NATO—but partly made up of former Gaddafists, some of whom have remained secretly loyal—declared a state of emergency in the entire country.
