"The Wikileaks website, founded by Assange, has exposed information about the United States waging War in Afghanistan and Iraq, and revealed the fact that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has carried out cyber-hacking attacks. For this reason, the US government has, for more than a decade, filed unwarranted, charges of sexual harassment, espionage, and computer-misuse against Assange. And continuously suppressed Assange through secret surveillance, global pursuit behind the scene, deals, and other means. The US would be satisfied with nothing short of his arrest. Britain has spared no effort in cooperating with the United States to arrest and extradite Assange, and promptly advanced the relevant procedures. This fully demonstrates the Loyalty of the British side in maintaining a special relationship with the US, as well as the fact that the US and Britain cooperated in the cross-border repression of specific individuals.
Assange's case is a mirror which reveals the hypocrisy of the US and British claim to defend press freedom. For them, exposing other countries enjoys full freedom, while exposing their own countries and allies would be severely punished. Those who expose other countries are heroes, while those who expose their own countries and partners are criminals. While it is political persecution for other countries to hold the Press accountable, it is legal for they themselves to suppress the Press.
The world is paying close attention to Assange's Human Rights situation, and personal fate. We believe that Justice will eventually be served and that hegemony and power cannot always have their way." (Speech by Wang Wenbin, Spokesman, Beijing Foreign Affairs, 21 June, 2022.
