Australia’s kangaroo wildlife trade is in the global spotlight ahead of World Kangaroo Day [October 24], as Europe edges closer to implementing a ban on the import of kangaroo meat and skins, with Indigenous representatives among a delegation invited to address the EU on the issue.
The European Parliament, which has already implemented a ban on the sale of non-Indigenous Canadian Harp Seal products, is now turning its attention to Australia’s treatment of the iconic kangaroo, as some of the world’s most powerful animal protection groups band together against the commercial slaughter of kangaroos and their joeys.
Some 80 global animal welfare, conservation, veterinary and rescue groups including World Animal Protection, IFAW, WIRES, Animals Australia, Voiceless, Animals Asia, Eurogroup for Animals, LAV Italy, GAIA Belgium, Vets for Compassion, the Animal Welfare Institute and Professor Peter Singer have signed a declaration demanding the end of the commercial killing of kangaroos due to its cruel practices.
Just last month the South Australian parliament voted in favour of an inquiry into the commercial killing of kangaroos, after a similar Parliamentary Inquiry in New South Wales, which highlighted the systemic cruelty in the commercial killing of Kangaroos.
The launch of A Global Declaration of The Animal Welfare Crisis came from this new evidence presented to the NSW inquiry which showed that there is no monitoring at the time of kill, which highlights the unregulated cruelty that exists in the commercial kangaroo industry.
This Global Declaration was launched at a press conference in the Italian parliament in Rome. Delegation members - Mick McIntyre, Simone Pavesi, Dennis Vink, Italian MP Eleonora Evi, Peter Hewitt, Ricky Buchanan, Mark Pearson.
Kangaroos Alive is part of a delegation speaking to members of parliament across Europe advocating for a ban of kangaroo imports into Europe. For a copy of this declaration please download at www.kangaroosalive.org/declaration
