Italian cruise ship tragedy a Titanic warning

The tragic sinking of Carnival's 'Costa Concordia' last Friday off the Italian island of Giglio is symptomatic of a greedy cruise ship industry fanatical about cramming as many paying passengers as possible on bigger and more ships, while driving a cost-cutting culture to constantly boost profit performance for shareholders on global stock markets. These days modern cruise ships are expected to be unsinkable. Almost exactly one hundred years ago, people expected the same of the Titanic. The parallels between the underlying causes of the Costa Concordia sinking and the Titanic are disturbingly similar.
