"Canada introduces ban on foreigners buying property, allows exceptions for refugees and permanent residents - ABC News" https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-01-02/canada-bans-foreigners-from-buying-property/101821128. Homelessness is rampantly shocking. In communities everywhere, including mine. The social democrats not only not solved the problem but are responsible for exacerbating it. But what should one expect of politicians whose income and lifestyle is far above the people they claim to represent, people whose lives they have little contact with.
Supply and demand. On the demand side you have annual immigration intakes of plus 400,000, refugees, temporary foreigner workers, foreign students On the supply side you have much ballyhooed social housing units which are in fact a drop in the bucket. Conservatives promising to pave greenbelts and build more housing. Short sighted and fatal to future food supply. And a dearth of rental housing because people will not invest in. The landlord and tenant act crafted by previous social democratic governments have made it virtually impossible to get rid of bad tenants. And Airbnbs have proliferated. Landlords have kicked out long term renters (can be troublesome) in favour of a quick buck. Outrageous profits.
Those who can find rent have to share apartments with friends. Those who can't find rent live in tents. Or travel 5000 miles to Nova Scotia in hopes of finding something affordable.
These homeless people are not predominantly druggies or drunks. But ordinary hard working people. However, there are enough drunks and mentally ill folks to make walking even in formerly safe cities dangerous. Mental health support staff is overwhelmed. And it takes 6 months to see a psychiatrist, assuming that you have a family doctor to refer you to one. Health care workers in ER have to have security guards to protect them from angry patients who wait in agony for hours until someone will attend to them.
There are no services. You can't get a vet for your dog if you haven't already got one. Appointments are booked up for 3 weeks. Emergency care only accessible in big cities. Dog food costs very high. Low income people need canine attention more than anyone, but they can't keep a dog. Very sad and tragic.
Can't get dental work done for many months. Surgery wait lists impossible. No tradesman or home repair or maintenance people to help seniors or low income people stay in their rundown houses. No seamstresses to mend clothing. No baby sitters, dog sitters, gutter cleaners, window washers available. Plumbers? Forget it.
Food banks empty . Food too expensive to donate. Gas prices for vehicles--a necessity for rural areas--through the roof. High fuel costs equal high transportation costs equal high food costs. Try $8.99 for a head of romaine lettuce.
Homeowners who have mortgages that must be renewed at atrocious interest rates face homelessness. Seriously.
We are in the early stages of collapse. And it seems to many that is orchestrated. I am one of them. I connect the dots. That makes me a nutter. A "conspiracy theorist." There is simply no other reasonable explanation for letting things go to hell. It cannot be all down to incompetence, or even Peak Oil. Food is becoming scare but they import 400,000 more diners? Smother online dissent, seize bank accounts, invoke martial law, deprive people of the ability to defend themselves?
