Mr Neil Blake’s talk 'From the back blocks to the Bay' discusses likely threats to the Bay from population growth, urban consolidation and climate change. He will also give an update on his Bay Keeper citizen science initiatives promoting community stewardship of our waterways – including his project recording recent changes to beach profiles and erosion around the Bay. Mr Jay Gleeson's talk will involve a presentation on AGL’s assessment of options for shipping Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from interstate and overseas, receiving it at an import jetty and injecting it into the pipeline transportation system for supply to south-eastern Australia. After assessing sites around Australia, Crib Point in Westernport Bay has been identified as AGL’s preferred option. Mr. Gleeson will give an outline of AGL’S Import Jetty Project and implications for Westernport Bay and Crib Point, and will take questions from the audience. 7 pm, Longbeach Place, 15 Chelsea Road, Chelsea. Monday, 19th October 2015. Recent research has found that vegetated coastal habitats –seagrasses, salt marshes and mangroves are amongst the most effective carbon sinks on the planet – up to 40 times terrestrial habitats.
You are all cordially invited to hear a preeminent researcher in this emerging field at the Annual General Meeting of Port Phillip Conservation Council Inc. on:

GUEST SPEAKER: Carolyn Ewers, M.S. Marine & Coastal Ecologist and doctoral candidate at Deakin University's Centre for Integrative Ecology will speak on:
Blue carbon hotspots: Distribution and abundance of blue carbon in Victoria.
Ms. Ewers completed a Bachelor and Masters degree in marine biology and fisheries from California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), USA. Whilst studying she also completed an internship at the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences (VIMS), researching the role of various shallow-water marine habitats in supporting biodiversity. Her Masters thesis researched the physiological effects of light and temperature stress associated with climate change on eelgrass (Zostera marina). During her research Carolyn became a scientific diver with the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) and worked as a California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program science crew member.
Currently, for her Doctoral degree, Carolyn is undertaking Blue carbon research at Deakin University, focusing on understanding the dynamics of carbon sequestration in salt marshes, mangroves, and seagrasses to maximize carbon gains in coastal ecosystem restoration projects.
Addition: Video of Pearman's lecture. Port Phillip Conservation Council contains a freakishly well-informed collection of environmental activists and is an entertaining and instructive organisation to attend ordinary meetings at. On 22 October, however, they have an additional drawcard in Dr Graeme Pearman who was for a long time a CSIRO insider.
Internationally renowned climate scientist and former Chief of CSIRO’s Atmospheric Research, Dr. Graeme Pearman is guest speaker at Port Phillip Conservation Council Inc. Annual General Meeting
7.30 PM
Monday 22nd October

All Welcome.
Port Phillip Conservation Council Inc have asked Dr. Pearman to speak on what to expect locally and globally at various temperature scenarios; tipping points; how the insurance industry might deal with climate change; and how the climate science community has dealt with the challenges of getting its message heard.
Dr. Pearman’s speech will precede the AGM and guests are invited to remain for the AGM and supper.
