In the recent 29 February by-election for the UK seat of Rochdale, George Galloway campaigned against Israel's mass-murder of Palestinians in Gaza and for Julian Assange's freedom. He defeated the two major pro-war parties, Labor and the Conservatives, to become the new MP for Rochdale in the House of Commons. In the attached 18 minute YouTube video, he is interviewed by Syrian-born British journalist Richard Medhurst. Both Galloway and Medhurst been tireless workers to free Julian Assange and against Israel's genocidal war in Gaza. In this interview, they discuss aspects of both issues which are not well understood even by many supporters of Julian Assange and of Palestine. One somewhat erroneous claim made by Medhurst in this interview is that the Australian Labor government - finally, almost two years since it assumed office on 23 May 2022 - has been supporting Assange. However, it seems to me that the Australian government, in just having recently told the UK government that Assange should be freed, has, so far, made almost no difference.
Instead, the Australian government could, with little effort, use the power vested in it as the government of a sovereign nation, to demand that the UK end its imprisonment of Assange, which violates UK law, international law and US law. Almost certainly the UK government would accede. If the UK government did not, both it and the US government, would quickly find themselves trying to defend their monstrous conduct either before the International Criminal Court or before the International Court of Justice. In the face of such a legal challange by an Australian government, which is resolved to defend Assange, both the UK and the US could be turned, into pariahs amongst the international community.
