Torture report shows need for checks and balances in government

A Patriot's Act is a legal novel by lawyer Kenneth Eades, exploring the impact of Bush's terror laws, based on case histories. In a legal investigation and then a trial, we see how US administrations redefined torture in the light of 'terrorism' and we learn what that could mean to an individual. This clear but sophisticated story dramatises what has been sacrificed for 'safety' and how much less safe it really makes us. This article by the author of the book, gives a history of how we got from there to here. Although the author writes about the United States, Australia has aped that country with its own terror laws.

Who is genuine about fighting terrorism in Syria - and who are the terrorists?

This article was previously published (24/8/15) on Russia Insider.

  • The Syrians who are being terrorised by the foreign-backed insurgents are genuine, and so is Russia with its joint counter-terrorism plan
  • But the US and its Coalition against ISIS?
  • What are their interests?
  • Do they care for Syrians and their army at all?

When George W Bush first declared the 'War on Terror' it seemed like just another of his 'mis-speaks' – surely he must have meant 'War on Terrorism'? But we didn't really bother because we knew it was neither, but just a label for wars of convenience on someone else's Terra.

A tough sell for the US to claim it's serious
about fighting terrorism in Syria when it
actually refuses to oppose Al Qaeda 1

Who is really responsible for Terrorism today?

Today there is heightened concern and fear among western publics about terrorism. There is no doubt that ISIS, along with other jihadi groups, poses a real (if often exaggerated) threat and have committed many heinous atrocities. But the horrible truth is, that the U.S and their G7 'partners' - that is, the political wing of what today makes up a Transnational Elite (i.e. the political, economic, cultural, elites who reside mainly in the G7 and who collectively manage neoliberal globalization) – are not only responsible for far greater crimes (i.e. millions dead and maimed in wars), but share a large degree of the blame for the rise of these groups in the first place.

Video: NATO has dropped the ball but Russia and China have picked it up and are running with it

In this Crosstalk interview by Peter Lavalle with journalist, Pepe Escobar, and economist, Martin Hennecke, the point is made that after 9-11 in 2001, the United States 'took its eye off the ball' to concentrate on the 'war on terror'. Now all it has is the war on terror, but while its attention has been focused on war for 13 years, China and Russia have made many new alliances with the BRICs countries and the future looks better for China and Russia than for the NATO group and its allies. Also criticism of the European and Anglophone press as fixated on personalities and imagined agendas to the exclusion of practical reality. Compares austerity debt in Europe to debt in China and Russia (very low). Refers to evolution away from the petrodollar

Former FBI agent: body scanners do NOT improve air travel security

Legitimate security experts know that full body irradiation scanners and body searches at airports don't improve security ... but the United States and Australian airport security authorities do it anyway.

Why Australia's presence in Afghanistan is untenable

An Australian lawyer criticises Australia's participation in war in Afghanistan. Australia's participation in the Afghan war has helped bring world Opium production to record levels, with Afghanistan leading the way. The justification for this war was given in 2001, and remains the justification for the war, which is set to become Australia's longest war, nearly 10 years later. This justification has never been scrutinised by Australia's mainstream newsmedia nor what passes for Australia's 'alternative' or 'far left' media. In this article, that case for war is comprehensively examined.

Australia, Afghanistan and three unanswered questions

In an address to the Australian War Memorial CEW Bean Foundation dinner on 15 October 2008, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd claimed that our goals in Afghanistan had been "endorsed by the United Nations Security Council." Australian lawyer Kellie Tranter asks: was the war authorised by the Security Council, is it legal, and how many civilians have been killed?

Why Prime Minister Kevin Rudd should take another look at the "image of the twin towers coming down"

On 26 March 2009 Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd told how the image of the World Trade Center Twin Towers coming down, which he "[could not] remove from [his] mind," made necessary the continuation of Australia's increasingly unpopular intervention in the Afghan war. Perhaps it is time that Kevin Rudd took a proper look at those images so that he could learn what really happened on 11 September 2001.

Today after some toing and froing, I learnt that my submission to the National Human Rights Consultation concerning "National security and terrorism", submitted on Friday 19 June, had been published.

New book by David Ray Griffin, "Osama bin Laden: Dead or Alive?"

The US's political discourse and foreign policy in recent years has been based on the assumption that Osama bin Laden is still alive. George W. Bush promised as president that he would get Osama bin Laden "dead or alive" and has been widely criticized for failing to do so. The US's present military escalation in Afghanistan is said to be necessary to "get Osama bin Laden." The news media regularly announce the appearance of new "messages from bin Laden." But what if Osama bin Laden died in December 2001---which is the last time a message to or from him was intercepted?

California is broke and Obama intends to escalate war in Afghanistan

Paul Craig Roberts, who served as served as an Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan Administration, is scathingly critical of President Obama's plans to escalate the war in Afghanistan and expand it into Pakistan, whilst taking no effective measures to fix the damage "as great as would be expected from foreign conquest" that the previous Bush administration inflicted on the US economy.

McCain reveals he knows how "to get Osama bin Laden" - seven years too late

After the documented loss of 4,152 US servicemen and 90,000 Iraqi civillians killed in the Iraq War and a cost to the US budget, so far, of US$574 billion, Republican Presidential nominee John McCain reveals that he knows how "to get Osama bin Laden". So, why didn't Republican Senator John McCain pass on that knowledge to the Republican Bush administration earlier?
