It's not about Immigration Stupid, Its about Population Growth !

In 1950 the world had 2.5 billion people. Now we have over 7 billion. The current dollar-based measure of poverty is less than $2.50 per day. There are over 3 billion people in this category. Of these, over one billion starving and undernourished peoples now live in degraded environments. This is almost half of the total human population in 1950. In 1950 the world was a different place. In 2014 we have more people living on less than $2.50 per day than even existed in 1950. And they live in far more degraded environments than that of the most impoverished people in 1950. Money is an indicative, not a true, measure of poverty. If you visit remote areas of Vanuatu, for example, you will find people living in a rich environment with no money. They are not "in poverty". They are living in a way that is substantially unchanged from their traditional ways. They have some significant social issues, but sustainability is not one of them. Economic dogma drive the growth in financial wealth which fosters environmental poverty. Australia is a world leader in this because its lifestyle is based on extreme population growth driving a misleading Key Performance Indicator called GDP growth. Please sign this petition asking GetUp and the Australian Conservation Foundation to help distribute the original "CommunityRun" petition to all its members: Wealth driven by extreme population growth simply harvests the environment to make some people rich and ever more people impoverished in every sense of the word. Why accept, without question, an undemocratic policy of extreme population growth in Australia? GetUp's recent member survey identified Climate Action as the highest priority. GetUp claims 175,057 members in Victoria alone. Being a web-based organisation this means they can send any campaign to a huge audience. Australia's rapid fossil fuel based emissions growth is rising in line with our extreme population growth, so surely GetUp supports the need to address this root cause? Fossil fuel based emissions rose roughly 32% between 1991 and 2011 in Australia's rapidly expanding carbon based economy. Climate Action can't ignore this reality. Coal exports are doubling every 20 years. This is caused as much by population growth driving economic growth as by anything else. The Australian Conservation Foundation states on its "About Us" page: The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) stands for ecological sustainability. We get to the heart of environmental problems by tackling the underlying social and economic causes. We work across society to influence urgent, transformative action to deliver lasting change on the scale required to secure a sustainable environment. We bring people together to champion the true value of our environment and its critical role in sustaining all other systems and in achieving human wellbeing. So surely the ACF supports the need to address population growth management given Australia's extremely bad track record in this area? The ACF has over 40,000 members Australia-wide. So why aren't they helping when this issue has such clear global humanitarian and environmental consequences? The UN predicts that by 2150 global population will be somewhere between 3 billion and 24 billion. They don't have a clue. The chaos that lies ahead cannot be ignored. It needs to be openly addressed. GetUp and the ACF understand this. They need to receive this petition to motivate them to do what they should have done already.
