In Barry Maley's world humans breed then die like fruitflies: Mark O'Connor & The Replacement Rate Fallacy

"A nice example of the Replacement Rate Fallacy," writes Mark O'Connor, of Barry Maley's demographic dogma in "Birth Rate Bubble". (ABC Radio's Unleashed)Maley claims that, "Any nation needs to have a birth rate of not less than 2.1 children per woman to maintain its population." "Humans are not fruitflies where the generation of parents dies as their offspring are born," laughs O'Connor. "For instance, if India achieved so-called “replacement fertility” now, with all its couples in future averaging just 2.05 children, its population would ... double, adding an extra 1 billion people!"

Port of Hastings: Polluters win against Hastings coastal lifestyle and environment

Yesterday a friend and I walked for four hours across the mudflats and estuarine lakes along a path and boardwalk among the mangroves of Hastings port - Ramsar-listed wetlands. We stopped on a bridge and recorded an amazing percussion symphony of frogs for about 15 minutes. Richard Laverack writes how furious he is at the imminent imposition the electorate 400 ha of heavy industry in a crazy plan to transport more and more imported cars in a world on the brink of fossil-fuel depletion and in a state where we still have refugees from fires caused by the hottest temperatures ever recorded. See inside for more.

Vic Government takes a leaf out of King Herod's book

Michael Hocking of "Axe the Tax" writes "Brumby’s Labor Government is stealing our homes. If this tax doesn’t affect you yet, you need to ask 'What if they decide to do a similar thing to the homes in my area?'" The growth areas tax is to be imposed on land rezoned from rural to urban by a stroke of the government pen. Rates and charges for water and power as well as land will skyrocket with the rezoning, driving out any decent person attempting to preserve bushland or produce food or live out retirement on a fixed income. Hocking describes how farmers will not be able to afford to sell, because of the tax, but, when they die, their children will have to pay the tax - $95,000 per ha -. In a divorce settlement, the same thing will apply. What next? A tax on the head of each child?

Bulldozing freeways through residents' rights

Protectors of Public Lands Victoria Inc have called for the withdrawal of the Major Transport Projects Facilitation Bill 2009. President Brian Walters SC has called it “an affront to democracy as well as to good planning." He says that it will lead to damage to the environment and public assets. It suggests that its proponents are in league with developers instead of upholding the community’s interests.”

The new refugees in the first world

The growth model produces extensive areas that are riddled with debt and have no genuinely productive function or options by which to repay that debt. The extremity of circumstance shown in these videos also presents a new, terribly real, but currently unreported wave of refugees - the repossessed homeless.

With friends like DSE and Parks Victoria, who needs wildlife enemies in the Pines (Victoria)?

Through incompetence and neglect 110 ha which was recently added to the Pines Flora and Fauna reserve was mismanaged by Parks Victoria and Department of Sustainability Victoria to the point where nearly all the species it contained have become extinct. Now this land is due to be separated by a huge tollway from the rest of the reserve, despite many bitter protests and submissions from residents and other concerned people, whose hearts are nearly broken. Edgars Creek: Kelvin Thomson defends public land, biodiverse CO2 sink

"VicRoads should hand over the land to Moreland City Council free-of charge on the proviso that it will be maintained as public open space." (Kelvin Thomson) Growth-lobby-friendly VicRoads claims it must sell 10 ha of rare riparian land in overpopulated and traffic-choked Coburg at market value under State Government policy. It it does this will be yet tragic cost of unwanted population growth, driven by the Brumby Government. A Victorian Parliamentary inquiry last year found that important open space and Crown Land is often sold off to developers for the highest price, with little consideration to the long term community and environmental ramifications (Fyffe 2009). Australia's population growth accelerating- set to double in 38 years - we need to STOP!

The estimated resident population of Australia at 30 June 2008 was 21.4 million people. This was an increase of 1.5 million people or 7.7%. Australia reached those numbers with an average growth rate of 1.5% per annum. Since then the growth rate has increased again, up to 1.9, which gives a doubling time for our population of 38 years.

Not good.

Your history is being erased by your government. What will they do next?

Melbourne:"It is alarming that so many big projects have been permitted by the Victorian State Government through a planning process that does not include an ability to make submissions or lodge appeals." National Trust are mounting a major campaign to persuade the State Government Planning Minister Justin Madden to stop destroying Melbourne's heritage for the sake of allowing developers to build what they want where they want it.

What ever happened to Royal Park? The destruction of Melbourne's first, most central and most historical park by land-grabs

Whose parks are they?
Alienation of central city parkland and heritage sites by Government and their transfer to developers, commercial organisations and special interest groups? Mismanagement of parkland by the local councils. Exclusion of community groups by local councils from previous long standing co operative involvement in management of parks and gardens. Discrimination by local councils restricting access to funding. Abuses are accumulating and getting worse. Crooked governments and cut-throat developers are very organised and local groups must also organise locally, state-wide and nationally to reinforce democratic rights. Tweed Council gag a corruption threat

Sylvia Hale, NSW Greens MP and Local Government spokesperson has slammed Tweed Council for imposing a ban on its Councillors disclosing information to the media.

Bogeyman of racism a useful decoy for the Growth Lobby

Our primary concern should not be about how people in our lifeboat treat each other, where they are from or how they look, but how many damn passengers the boat can carry sustainably past the tumultuous storms of peak oil, peak water and peak everything that loom over the horizon.

MP Matt Guy asks Finance & Public Admin Committee to call Madden & GAA in for questioning on GAIC

Shadow Minister for Planning Matthew Guy will today ask the Parliament’s all-powerful Finance and Public Administration Committee to call the Planning Minister and the Growth Areas Authority (GAA) to appear before it to urgently explain the proposed Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) that will have damaging effects on Victorian families. Secretive Private water increase MAIN cause of Darling R. crisis - NOT drought - UN supports Emergency Enquiry

Listen to interview.
New data shows that the effect of the rapid increase in privately-held water in the Darling Basin on the volumes of water available for essential public and environmental use is the main cause of the water crisis, not the drought. The Senior water advisor to the United Nations supports a call for declaration of a State of Emergency and the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the management of the water of the Murray-Darling Basin.

Ratepayers should resist costly Gympie asset sell-off and development

GYMPIE Regional Council plans to sell off industrial land at Tin Can Bay, Monkland and a home at Kilkivan to raise revenue because council income from ratepayers only funds a $40m budget. Apparently the Council has already committed itself to spend $115m. Surely only a council of half-wits would not have foreseen the need to cut expenditure with the global financial crash and the parlous condition of the state budget? Friends of Rainbow Beach say that, far from saving the ratepayers money, the council's plans to sell off assets will cost residents of Gympie Region even more.

Can research benefit wildlife? Can research contribute to its survival? Can research engender respect for the intrinsic value of wildlife? Or will an overriding profit motive drive all wildlife to extinction?

ALP Kelvin Thomson MP says Five Million is too many; Melbourne should control population growth

"Everything that makes our city the great place to live, work and raise a family, is potentially under threat if population growth and urban sprawl continue at the current rate. We must implement a strategy to control population growth, urban expansion and development. Our way of life, open spaces and infrastructure cannot be sacrificed on the altar of ever expanding population. We have a responsibility to secure our city’s future through thorough, thoughtful and detailed planning. This planning should not include an expanding Melbourne waistline." (Kelvin Thomson MP, Federal Member for Wills, "Five Million is too many: Securing the Social and Environmental Future of Melbourne: Submission to the Urban Growth Boundary Review, July 2009)

Victoria: Urban Boundaries Expansion is another name for Lebensraum

Developers, led by Planning Minister Justin Madden, in a move reminiscent of Hitler's tanks on Poland, are poised to invade and bulldoze the green wedges to enrich themselves, with the same excuses for aggression of ‘lebenraum’ – living space - despite the objections of the people who live there. Is there a Churchill in Victoria with the guts to stop the bulldozers or will the government sacrifice democracy completely? Here is a submission that spells out what the damage will be if the Opposition allows the government to legitimise the totalitarian aggression of “lebensraum” – Urban Boundaries Expansion.

Melbourne's garden, Uno's Garden and the Urban Growth Boundary - by Catherine Manning

What do children, bandicoots, Melbourne's Green Wedges and the Garden of Eden have in common? This poignant submission to a developer-dominated government about a children and bandicoots' garden goes right back to the garden of Eden, retold again and again, this time in Uno's garden and a garden with 'protected' bandicoots near Clyde, Victoria, on the edge of the Green Wedge.

Video: Taxed Out Michael Hocking's speech on GAIC Tax: Melbourne Rally 14 July 2009

You tube video inside of Michael Hocking's speech about the GAIC tax which Planning Minister Madden wants to inflict on the people who live in the Green Wedges which he wants to rezone for urban development.

Madden's land-grab would bring about an Animal Apocalypse of Victorian wildlife

"We are looking at an imminent wildlife disaster of unprecedented proportions in Victoria. The situation is growing so serious for species, especially kangaroos, that I cannot keep up with the calls I receive for help and our volunteers are stretched to the limits on the frontiers of encroaching suburbia, dealing with a sort of 'animal apocalypse'. Wildlife corridors are the only answer, but Mr Madden, the Minister for Planning's plans, should he succeed in getting them through parliament, would cut off this final escape from extinction." (Maryland Wilson, Australian Wildlife Protection Council, July 14, 2009.)

Julianne Bell delivers resolutions to Planning Minister Madden in late impromptu meeting

Shortly after his lunch with the "Progressive Business Association" must have ended, Mr Madden, who apparently departed shyly out the back door, looked surprised to be intercepted and presented with the resolutions of the Bastille Day Rally against Urban Expansion and Rotten taxes by Julianne Bell, Rosemary West and Jill Quirk, acting on behalf of the environment and democracy.

Multi NGO Rally Melbourne Bastille Day (14 July) against urban expansion in green wedges & rotten taxes

Multi NGO including Wildlife groups Melbourne Bastille Day rally to protest land speculation, green wedges destruction, and taxation without representation, including the proposed $95,000 ha rezoning tax; the privileged hearings granted to paid up members of the ALP-linked Progressive Business lobby, whereas taxpayers pay far more for no representation at all."We would be very glad if you can send us a message on behalf of your organisation in support of the rally (contact details end of article). This will help prove that your organisation is not city-centric or has "NIMBY" tendencies." (Oh those dreaded NIMBY stand up for yourself SUFI - ca suffit - tendencies!)

Australia's optimum population threatened by misguided UK political upstart - Ed Miliband

If "Australia was a big country well able to absorb a bigger population" [Ed Miliband], then we would have full employment, public infrastructure and services would have excess capacity ready to cope, federal and state governments would be in surplus and there would be no undue pressures on our economy, society or ecology.
But this is clearly not the case.

Victoria: Urban Growth Boundary extension into Green Wedges

The public are finding democratic ways to combat the devastation of all they hold dear and threats to life itself, as Victoria's government closes its eyes and steps as hard on the growth-accelerator as it can. You may already know about the requisitioning of 50,000 ha for residential development and new roads and the government's intention to simply take away our green wedges and get rid of our wildlife and trees. Yes our democracy is being trampled along with everything else, but we have not entirely lost people power.

NSW MP Moyes speech for the people against Motor Sport (World Rally Championship) Bill 2009

The psychological condition of "solistalgia" is now widespread in the North Coast area [where REPCO rally push is]. Solistalgia is defined as "the deep distress induced by environmental change, which is exacerbated by the sense of powerlessness and loss of control over the changes that are occurring". "I do not approve of anything that can be construed as a misuse of power and, therefore, I will not support any bill that allows large-scale events unwanted by the people who would have to host them."
Note that Dr Moyes was actually initially physically locked out of the room where this bill was being debated. You can read about that Which MPs voted for and against the REPCO Rally law in NSW Parliament?

Urban Democracy & Environment movement stops rotten DACs law - Victoria, Australia

Another success for the urban democracy and environment movement. The day after the "Restore Residents Rights" rally at parliament house on June 10, which was attended by about 600 people, Victoria's upper house rejected changes to the Planning and Environment Act that would have introduced Development Assessment Committees [DACs] to the State.
